Jonathan's Story

Jonathan Larson: 1960 – 1996

Jonathan was an American composer, lyricist and playwright who revolutionised Broadway with his ground-breaking Tony Award winning rock musical RENT.

1989

Jon wrote his first musical Superbia in 1989. It was a futuristic synth-pop and rock musical with a cast of 15. It was never produced as it was seen as too progressive for Broadway.

1991

Jon then wrote a rock monologue (meant to be performed as a solo work) first title Boho Days, which became tick, tick…Boom! in 1991 in response to the “large and expensive cast” issue that producers raised in Superbia.

1993

Jon’s seminal work RENT was first seen in a workshop production in 1993. Rent premiered on Broadway in 1996 and gained critical acclaim winning several awards including the Tony Award for Best Musical.

1996

Sadly, Jonathan passed away on January 25, 1996 before the first Off-Broadway preview of Rent. But while the world has lost a musical genius, the impact and legacy of Jonathan Larson lives on…

The show runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.

The show contains some coarse language and is suitable for ages 16 and above. That said, young audiences are welcomed with an accompanying adult.

Do note that the show contains flashing lights, strobe effects, theatrical haze and loud music.

The film is based on the stage musical and while the story is the same, we are not related to the film. Though we’re really hoping Andrew Garfield will come see us!
